Rivers APC rejects impeachment moves against Governor Fubara
The Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has strongly rejected the reported impeachment process initiated against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, warning that such a move could destabilise the state and damage the image of the ruling party.
In a press statement issued on Thursday and signed by the Rivers APC spokesperson, Darlington Nwauju, the party said it was alarmed by recent developments emanating from the Rivers State House of Assembly. While acknowledging the constitutional independence of the legislature and its role in providing checks and balances, the APC leadership made it clear that it does not support any impeachment action against the governor at this time.
According to the statement, the party views the impeachment threat as a continuation of unresolved internal disputes inherited from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), cautioning against allowing such conflicts to resurface within the APC.
The APC further addressed claims that the impeachment process is linked to budgetary issues. The party recalled that during the period of emergency rule in the state, a one-year budget totaling ₦1.485 trillion was transmitted to the National Assembly by the President in May 2025. The budget was approved by the Senate on June 25, 2025, and by the House of Representatives on July 22, 2025, and is expected to run until August 2026.
The party noted that if Governor Fubara is satisfied with the existing budget framework, he is not under any obligation to present a supplementary budget. It also emphasized that the constitution allows a state governor a six-month spending window into a new fiscal year.
The Rivers APC leadership urged members of the State House of Assembly, particularly those elected on the platform of the party, to resist external pressures aimed at destabilising the government. It stressed that the administration of Governor Fubara remains an APC government and should not be undermined by internal disagreements.
“Let it be known that our party will do everything possible to ensure that the Government of Rivers State is not destabilized through fratricidal disagreements,” the statement read.
The party concluded by calling on lawmakers to immediately discontinue the impeachment process, warning that proceeding with it could drag the APC’s image “into the mud” and stall the state’s development.
“Let our state remain a democracy and not a politicocracy,” the statement added.
