Reps Minority caucus demands immediate suspension of new Tax Laws
The House of Representatives Minority Caucus has urged the Federal Government to immediately suspend the implementation of Nigeria’s new tax laws over alleged post-passage alterations.
Led by Minority Leader Rep. O.K. Chinda, the caucus says the gazetted versions differ from what lawmakers debated and passed.
The affected laws are the Nigeria Tax Act 2025, Nigeria Tax Administration Act 2025, Nigeria Revenue Service Act 2025, and Joint Revenue Board Act 2025, signed in June and due to take effect January 1, 2026.
The alarm was raised by Rep. Abdussamad Dasuki, prompting the House to set up an investigative committee.
The caucus called the issue an attack on legislative independence and urged Nigerians to disregard any version not signed by the Clerk to the National Assembly and the President.
The controversy has drawn calls for suspension from the NBA, NLC, Atiku Abubakar, and Peter Obi.
The Federal Government insists implementation will proceed, while the House has ordered a review and possible re-gazetting of the laws.
