Rann Airstrike: Conditions For Post-operative Care Not Adequate- ICRC Surgeon
The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) has called for the evacuation of all the patients involved in the accidental airstrike on Monday to Maiduguri, saying the conditions for post-operative care are not adequate.
The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement expressed shock at the death of civilians, including six aid workers from the Nigerian Red Cross, in a botched military airstrike on Rann area of Borno, near the border with Cameroon.
The call was made by Dr. Laurent Singa, an ICRC surgeon in Rann.
Also Head of Delegation for the ICRC in Nigeria, Eloi Fillion made said no matter what happen the organisation remain committed to continue providing humanitarian assistance to the displaced persons.
His words: “It is unacceptable that so many civilians were killed and wounded. All measures must be put in place to ensure that such a tragic incident never happens again.
“Nevertheless, we stand committed to continue providing humanitarian assistance to the persons affected by the conflict in the North East of Nigeria”, ,” said Eloi Fillion, Head of Delegation for the ICRC in Nigeria.
Similarly the United Nations Children’s Fund called for safer environment for aid workers working to provide humanitarian relief and welcomed plans by the Nigerian government to probe the military misfire.
Its director for emergency programmes, Manuel Fontaine condemned the “tragic loss of lives”
“These deaths, in a remote area of northeastern Nigeria, where protracted conflict has caused extreme suffering and triggered a severe malnutrition crisis, underline the importance of protecting civilians in complex humanitarian emergencies,” said Fontaine.
At least 50 people were killed and more than 100 injured in an accidental airstrike on a camp for displaced people, which the airforce had mistaken for a Boko Haram camp.
The six Red Cross workers were in Rann as part of a humanitarian operation bringing food to more than 25,000 displaced people.
