2026 proposed budget breakdown released

Prioritises Infrastructure, Security, and Social Services

The Federal Government has released the breakdown of the proposed 2026 national budget, outlining key spending priorities aimed at boosting infrastructure development, strengthening security, and improving social welfare across the country.

According to the details made public, the Works sector received the largest allocation with N3.4 trillion, reflecting the government’s focus on road construction, rehabilitation, and other critical infrastructure projects nationwide.

The Defence sector followed closely with N3.2 trillion, underscoring sustained efforts to combat insecurity and enhance the operational capacity of the armed forces. Education was allocated N2.3 trillion, signaling renewed commitment to human capital development at all levels.

The combined Health and Social Welfare sector received N2.1 trillion, aimed at improving healthcare delivery, strengthening social protection programmes, and supporting vulnerable populations. Agriculture and Food Security was allotted N1.4 trillion to boost food production, stabilise prices, and support farmers.

Further allocations include N1.3 trillion each for Police Affairs and the Niger Delta, targeting improved internal security and accelerated development in the oil-producing region. The Power sector received N1.1 trillion, intended to address electricity generation, transmission, and distribution challenges.

In preparation for upcoming electoral activities, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) was allocated N1 trillion.

The proposed 2026 budget is expected to be presented to the National Assembly for consideration and approval, with lawmakers set to scrutinise the allocations in line with national development priorities and fiscal sustainability.
