Police To Protesters: Beware of Disrupting National Grid

The Nigeria Police Force has cautioned against engaging in violent protests nationwide.

In a statement released on Tuesday, the Force spokesperson, Muyiwa Adejobi, stated firmly that such actions would not be tolerated during protests. He warned that any attempt to do so would be met with the full force of the law.

Adejobi considered unacceptable such act to disrupt critical infrastructure like airports, hospitals, and other essential services during a protest, warning that tampering with the national grid is deemed a criminal offense.

Adejobi reiterated, “Those planning peaceful protests should inform the police for protection. Those engaging in disruptive activities should be prepared to face legal consequences. Tampering with the national grid or disrupting critical infrastructure like airports and hospitals is a punishable offense.”

The Force, dedicated to maintaining law and order and ensuring citizen safety, cautioned against any acts that could lead to economic sabotage, treasonable felony, and threaten national security and public safety during protests. Any attempt to disrupt critical infrastructure will be met with legal consequences.

Recent events saw disruptions at airports and the shutdown of the national grid on June 3 by various unions aiming to press the government for a new minimum wage agreement.

While affirming the citizens’ rights to peaceful protest, Adejobi stressed that the police would not tolerate violations of others’ rights. Ensuring public order and protecting key infrastructures are top priorities, according to the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.

The Police also called on parents to counsel their children against being manipulated by disruptive elements attempting to incite anarchy. Upholding citizens’ rights and maintaining public order remain at the forefront for the Nigeria Police Force.
