Police arrest militants threatening attack on oil facilities, demanding N3m monthly salary
Operatives of the Inspector General of Police Intelligence Response Team have arrested two members of the Amalgamated Niger Delta Avengers, who have been threatening to kidnap oil workers and attack oil facilities.
According to information available to The Eagle Online, the arrest followed several reports of threat received by the Niger Delta Petroleum Resources in Obumeze Community, Ahoada Local Government Area of Rivers State.
In response to the threat, the Inspector General of Police, Ibrahim Idris, deployed the IRT, headed by Assistant Commissioner of Police Abba Kyari, to Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital.
The threat messages demanded an initial payment of N20 million and to be placed on monthly salary of N3 million.
They said failure to do so would be followed with kidnap, death, vandalism/explosion and attacks on the company’s assets.
One of the suspects, LoveGod Chinuzioke, 27, is a native of Obumeze Community in Ahoada LGA of Rivers State.
Chinuzioke is from the host community of NDPR and was just granted bail from Port Harcourt Maximum Prison for a case of armed robbery and kidnapping.
He hatched the idea of extorting money from the company and got contact numbers of the Senior Personnel of the NDPR.
Also arrested was Justice Okolo, 25, a native of Aniocha LGA of Delta State.
Okolo composed and sent the threat messages to the company.
He admitted belonging to a notorious armed robbery gang terrorising Ahoada and environs and the phone used for the threat was recovered from him.
Effort is still on going to arrest the remaining accomplices at large and recover arms, ammunition and explosives still in the possession of the gang, The Eagle Online was told.
