Police Arrest Four Officers for Allegedly Extorting ICPC Chairman of ₦53,000 in Abuja

The Nigeria Police Force has arrested four of its officers for allegedly extorting ₦53,000 from the Chairman of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC), Dr. Musa Adamu Aliyu, SAN, during a stop-and-search operation in Abuja.

The incident reportedly occurred when the ICPC chairman, who was travelling in an unmarked vehicle, was stopped by the officers.

Unaware of his identity, the policemen allegedly demanded and collected ₦53,000 from him before allowing him to proceed.

Following a complaint and subsequent investigation, the officers were identified, arrested and taken into custody.

Police authorities confirmed that disciplinary procedures have commenced against the officers, reiterating the Force’s commitment to professionalism, integrity and accountability.

The Force condemned all forms of extortion and misconduct by personnel, stressing that officers found guilty of unethical or criminal conduct would face appropriate sanctions in line with existing regulations.

The development has renewed concerns over the persistence of extortion by some police personnel despite repeated reforms and warnings by the Police High Command aimed at improving public confidence in law enforcement.
