PDP NEC Backs March 29–30 National Convention, Urges Reconciliation Among Members

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reaffirmed plans to hold the party’s National Convention on March 29 and 30, 2026, as part of efforts to reposition the party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The decision was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the 106th NEC meeting of the party held on Wednesday in Abuja.

In the communiqué, the NEC commended the National Caretaker Working Committee led by Abdulrahman Mohammed for stabilizing the party and steering its affairs during the ongoing transitional period.

The committee also expressed satisfaction with the successful conduct of ward and local government congresses across the country and expressed confidence that the state congresses scheduled to take place this weekend would be conducted peacefully and in line with the party’s constitution and guidelines.

NEC further approved the conduct of zonal congresses in the next two weeks as part of the party’s preparations for the national convention, where a new National Working Committee (NWC) is expected to emerge.

The party also welcomed judgments of the Court of Appeal affirming the authority of the caretaker leadership, noting that the rulings had strengthened constitutional processes and stability within the PDP.

As part of efforts to address internal disputes, NEC emphasized the need for reconciliation and unity among party leaders and stakeholders. It urged members involved in legal battles to embrace dialogue and avoid further litigation, including appeals to the Supreme Court, in the interest of party unity.

The committee also approved the expansion of the party’s electronic membership registration system to modernize its database, encourage grassroots participation and improve transparency in party administration.

On preparations for the 2027 general elections, NEC noted the revised timetable issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in line with the Electoral Act 2026, which mandates the issuance of election notices at least 300 days before the polls.

According to the party’s approved timetable, submission of its membership register to INEC will take place on April 10, 2026, while primaries for various elective positions will begin in May. State Assembly primaries are scheduled for May 2, National Assembly primaries for May 9, governorship primaries for May 16, and the presidential primary for May 25.

The NEC also constituted several committees to oversee activities for the forthcoming convention, including the main organizing committee, electoral committee, accreditation committee, media and publicity committee, security committee and others responsible for logistics and mobilization.

Meanwhile, the party condemned an attack by hoodlums on its members during the recent congresses in Oyo State, describing the incident as unfortunate and contrary to democratic values. NEC called on security agencies to investigate the incident and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.

The party urged its leaders, stakeholders and members across the country to remain united and support all processes leading to the successful conduct of the state, zonal and national convention activities.

NEC reiterated the PDP’s commitment to democratic principles, national unity and good governance, while assuring Nigerians that the party remains a credible platform for responsible leadership and national development.
