PDP Fixes National Convention for March 28–29 in Abuja
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has fixed March 28 and 29, 2026, for its National Convention, to be held in Abuja, where new members of the National Working Committee (NWC) and other statutory organs of the party will be elected.
This decision was announced in a communiqué issued at the end of the party’s 105th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting held on Monday, February 2, 2026, in Abuja.
At the meeting, NEC unanimously reaffirmed all resolutions reached at the party’s Emergency 104th NEC meeting of December 7, 2025, stressing that the decisions remain valid, lawful, and binding, having been taken in line with the PDP Constitution, the 1999 Constitution, the Electoral Act, and relevant court judgments.
NEC also restated its confidence in the independence of the judiciary and welcomed the judgment of the Federal High Court sitting in Ibadan, which upheld the legality of the PDP’s leadership and administrative structure. The committee noted that the judgment directed the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to recognise the Abdulrahman Muhammed-led National Caretaker Committee as the lawful leadership of the party.
The committee reaffirmed the legitimacy and authority of the National Caretaker Committee, with Senator Samuel Anyanwu as Secretary, describing it as the only lawful national administrative organ of the PDP pending the conduct of the National Convention.
As part of preparations for a smooth transition to an elected leadership, NEC approved the timetable for congresses across the country, with ward and local government congresses scheduled for February, while state congresses will hold in March. The National Caretaker Committee was directed to issue detailed guidelines and modalities for the congresses in line with the party’s constitution, INEC regulations, and judicial directives.
NEC further approved the extension of the tenure of the National Caretaker Working Committee, as well as affected state and zonal caretaker committees, pending the conduct of the National Convention and the state and zonal congresses.
The committee mandated the National Caretaker Committee to immediately activate convention sub-committees and commence full logistical and administrative preparations to ensure a transparent, inclusive, and credible convention.
Calling for unity, NEC urged party members at all levels to remain disciplined and loyal, and to avoid actions capable of undermining the cohesion of the party. It reaffirmed the PDP’s commitment to rebuilding a strong, democratic, and electorally competitive party capable of providing credible leadership to Nigerians.
The communiqué was jointly signed by the National Chairman of the National Caretaker Working Committee, Hon. Abdulrahman Muhammed, and the National Secretary, Senator Samuel N. Anyanwu.
