Okorocha refutes exit rumors, reaffirms loyalty to APC
Former Governor of Imo State, Senator Rochas Okorocha, has debunked recent claims that he intends to leave the All Progressives Congress (APC), labeling such reports as baseless and the work of detractors.
Responding to a media report alleging that he described the APC as a party “desperate to hijack power,” Okorocha, through a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media, Sam Onwuemeodo, categorically denied making any such statement. He described the allegations as the latest in a series of attempts by political opponents to tarnish his image.
He questioned the credibility of the claims, pointing out that it would be illogical for him to attack a political party he helped build—one that has held federal power since 2015.
“Nearly eight years after leaving office as Imo State Governor, and after serving as a senator, it’s surprising that my name still unsettles some people,” Okorocha stated.
He dismissed viral quotes attributed to him on social media as fabricated, including the false statement: “APC is no longer a political party but a party desperate to hijack power at all costs. I am at the corner looking at them — Senator Rochas Okorocha.”
“That quote is completely fictitious,” he said. “It makes no sense to say the APC, which has been in power since 2015, is trying to hijack power. What power again?”
Okorocha took the opportunity to remind Nigerians of his pioneering role in the formation of the APC. As the only sitting governor from the South-East to join the party during its formative phase, he faced immense criticism and political risk ahead of the 2015 elections.
“At a time when most South-East leaders were skeptical about the APC’s future, I took the bold step, endured ridicule, and stayed the course,” the statement recalled.
His early commitment and leadership, the release emphasized, earned him the unanimous selection as the founding Chairman of the Progressive Governors Forum—a platform he helped build into a major influence within the party.
