Ogun Varsities Generate Over N2bn In Six Months

In spite of the coronavirus pandemic that characterized the global economic, two Ogun State Government owned Universities have generated over N2bn as revenue between January and June, 2020.

The revenue generated was achieved in their quest to meet the contemporary and future needs of the nation through the training of students, who could compete favourably with their counterparts across the globe.

The universities are Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago Iwoye, which generated over N1.036bn, while its counterpart, Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED), Ijagun also generated a sum of N1.011bn as revenue within same period.

The Vice Chancellor of OOU, Prof. Ganiu Olatunde and that of TASUED, Prof. Abayomi Arigbabu disclosed this during the ongoing 2020 budget assessment of the institutions before members of Ogun State House of Assembly Committee on Education, Science and Technology led by Hon. Ademuyiwa Adeyemi at the Assembly Complex, Oke-mosan.

In his presentation, Prof. Olatunde, who was represented by the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academics), Prof. Deji Agboola remarked that the revenue was generated from different sources such as tuition fees, contractors’ registration fees, transcripts, acceptance fees, rent of university’s properties, grants and subventions among others.

He listed various projects ongoing in OOU within the period to include construction and furnishing of Faculty of Science building and Social Science building both at main campus. Also, Architecture building at Ibogun campus, Agricultural Science building at Ayetoro, Anatomy/Mobil building as well as the Animal House building at OACHS, Sagamu campus.

Similarly, Vice Chancellor of TASUED stated that the institution got N277.8m from internally generated revenue and N733.2m from grants and aid from the state government and TETFUND, with a total of N346.4m expended on capital projects on the school campus.

The construction included a University Health Centre extension, College of Vocational and Technical Education building, Post Graduate School building, Smart Classroom building, Home Economics Laboratory, College of Science and Information Technology Laboratory among others.

Other tertiary institutions that had their 2020 budget appraised by the lawmakers are Gateway ICT Polytechnic, Saapade; Abraham Adesanya Polytechnic, Ijebu-Igbo, and College of Health Technology, Ilese.
