Omooba Risawe
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo on Tuesday admitted that God has always been given him immense favour beyond his own expectations and what he deserves from Him,stressing that,’God has been partial with me from childhood’.
Obasanjo disclosed this while leading a morning devotion to mark the valentine day held at his sitting room at presidential hilltop, Abeokuta,Ogun State Capital.
‘I was born in a village, and anybody born in that village would have concluded that the popularity of those born there will not go beyond next village.  My parents were complete illiterates’,he said.
The former President disclosed that he strayed into the army, stating that his saddest day was when he sat in front of a military panel set up by late former Head of State, Sanni Abacha to try him over a phantom coup, and sentence to death and later commuted to 30 years imprisonment.
Obasanjo who read from the Bible in the book of Isaiah 45:1-4, recalled that, following the jail term slammed on him, he told himself  if he deserves such treatment, but left everything in the hand of  God.
He said following pressure from international community leaders which include: Jimmy Carter and others, the then government reduced the sentence to 15 years, adding that if Abacha had been alive he would have spend minimum of ten years in prison.
Obasanjo said the death of Abacha saw him spending three years in prison, pointing out that as part of partiality gesture from God to him, he came out from prisons to meet agitation for him to contest, but the rest is history.
The former president said, there would always be trouble, tribulations and problems, but was of the conviction that, if one is prayerful and close to God,would overcome all. He prayed for longetivity for every humanbeing.
