NSCEA mourns murder of kidnapped Kaduna Anglican Priest

… Demands Urgent Action as Family Remains in Captivity

The Nigerian Supreme Council for Ecclesiastical Affairs (NSCEA) has expressed deep sorrow and outrage following the confirmation of the death of Reverend Edwin Achi, the Priest-in-Charge of Ebenezer Anglican Church, Ungwan Maijero in Kaduna State. Reverend Achi, who was abducted alongside his wife and daughter, has been confirmed dead while still in captivity.

According to the Anglican Diocese of Kaduna, the priest and his family were kidnapped on the night of 28 October 2025 from their home in Nissi community, Chikun Local Government Area, near the Kaduna Refinery. The abductors reportedly demanded a ransom of ₦600 million, underscoring the escalating insecurity and brazen criminality terrorising communities across the state.

Despite the ransom demand, the Diocese announced that Reverend Achi did not survive the ordeal. His death has been described as a “painful blow” to the Diocese, clergy, church members, and all who benefited from his dedicated ministry, humility, and unwavering devotion to God’s service. In honour of his memory, the Diocese has cancelled its planned “Stand Up for Jesus 2025” event.

In a statement issued on Friday, the NSCEA joined the Diocese of Kaduna and the wider Christian community in mourning the loss.

“Reverend Achi was a devoted servant of God whose life brought hope, comfort, and spiritual growth to many,” NSCEA said. “His tragic death is a reminder of the worsening insecurity religious leaders and their families face daily.”

The Council extended condolences to the grieving family and called for urgent prayers, support, and solidarity—especially for Reverend Achi’s wife and daughter, who remain in captivity.

NSCEA also condemned the continuous targeting of clergy and church families, urging federal, state, and local authorities to strengthen security measures and take decisive action against kidnappers and bandits.

“The time has come for sustained, effective action to end the scourge of kidnapping and banditry in Nigeria,” the statement emphasized. “Our religious leaders and vulnerable communities deserve protection.”

The Council encouraged Christian bodies across the country to unite in prayer and advocacy, calling for justice, peace, and strengthened security for all citizens.

As the Christian community mourns, NSCEA prayed for the repose of Reverend Achi’s soul and for divine comfort for his family.

“May God grant eternal rest to the soul of Reverend Achi, comfort his grieving family, and bring swift deliverance to his wife and daughter,” the statement added.
