No Public Laboratory In Nigeria Can Diagnose Monkey Pox – FG

The Federal Government on Thursday revealed that there is no laboratory in Nigeria that can diagnosis Monkey Pox.
The National Coordinator, Nigeria Center for Diseases Control, Dr. Chikwe Ihekwazu, gave the shocking revelation when he appeared before the Senate Committee on Primary Health Care.
The National Coordinator however said only Redeemer University, which is privately-owned has the capacity to diagnosis the disease.
Ihekwazu added that the government has also sent samples to Dakar in Senegal to diagnose and ascertain the presence of the disease in the country.
According to him: “We don’t have laboratory to diagnose Monkey Pox in Nigeria.
“The only one in the country is owned by Reedeemer University.
“We have sent samples to Dakar in Senegal to confirm the disease.”
The chairman also revealed that the origin of the disease is from animals.
Ihekwazu said: “It is national embarrassment that we can’t determine whether it is chicken pox or monkey pox.”
