NNPC/Renaissance JV Donates $300,000 to Strengthen Cancer Treatment at National Hospital Abuja
The NNPC/Renaissance Joint Venture (JV) has announced a fresh donation of $300,000 to the National Hospital, Abuja, aimed at sustaining the maintenance of the hospital’s life-saving Linear Accelerator (LINAC) Radiotherapy Machine—a critical piece of cancer-treatment infrastructure originally donated by the JV in 2019.
The announcement according to Mr. Andy Odeh, Chief Corporate Communications Officer of the NNPCL was made on Tuesday at the office of the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare in Abuja, where representatives of the JV highlighted the profound impact the machine has had on cancer care in Nigeria.

A Lifeline for Thousands of Patients
According to Engr. Oluwaseyi Omotowa, Chief Upstream Investment Officer at NNPC Upstream Investment Management Services—represented by Nkechi Anaedobe, Head of Business Services—the LINAC machine has already transformed cancer treatment outcomes at the National Hospital.
Key results recorded since its installation include:
- Treatment of over 2,000 cancer patients
- 80% reduction in treatment costs
- Shortened radiotherapy sessions from 12 minutes to 2 minutes
- Subsidized care for 712 indigent patients, with discounts ranging from 25% to 100%
Omotowa emphasized that maintaining such advanced medical technology is essential for ensuring continuous treatment.
“The sustainability of such advanced medical technology hinges on regular maintenance… Recognizing this, the NNPC Limited/Renaissance JV and partners are taking a strategic step forward,” he said.
He added that the new fund would enable timely maintenance, reduce machine downtime, ensure compliance with international medical standards, and maintain precision calibration—all of which are crucial for effective radiotherapy.
Government Commends Private-Sector Support
Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Dr. Muhammed Ali Pate, applauded the JV’s gesture, calling it a model for other industry stakeholders.
“This aligns perfectly with the broader efforts to revamp critical infrastructure… Partnerships like this from forward-thinking private actors significantly strengthen the cause,” he stated.
Pate noted that the support complements President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s renewed investment drive in Nigeria’s health sector, especially in the fight against cancer.
National Hospital Celebrates ‘Lifeline of Hope’
The Chief Medical Director of the National Hospital, Dr. Muhammad Raji Mahmud, described the donation as a crucial boost for thousands of patients treated annually at the hospital’s Cancer Centre.
“The backing from NNPC Limited and Renaissance has significantly bolstered in-country cancer care, reducing dependency on medical tourism and strengthening national capacity,” Mahmud said.
Renaissance: ‘This Is a Strategic Investment’
Managing Director/CEO of Renaissance Africa Energy Company, Tony Attah, stressed that the company views the intervention as a long-term investment in Nigeria’s health ecosystem.
“This is not charity. This is a strategic investment in the well-being of Nigerians, in the resilience of our health systems, and in the shared future we all strive to build,” he noted.
Building a Resilient Future for Cancer Care
The NNPC/Renaissance JV says it will continue fostering partnerships that support both immediate healthcare demands and long-term medical advancement in Nigeria, reaffirming its commitment to enhancing access to quality cancer treatment.
