NLC Commends Kaduna Governor Over Recall of Sacked Teachers

…Urges Full Implementation of Minimum Wage Adjustment
The Kaduna State Chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has applauded Governor Uba Sani for reinstating some teachers dismissed under the previous administration.
Chairman of the Kaduna NLC, Comrade Ayuba Magaji Suleiman, gave the commendation on Tuesday while addressing members of the Nigerian Guild of Investigative Journalists (NGIJ), who are in the state for a governance assessment exercise.
It will be recalled that the administration of former Governor Nasir El-Rufai had, between 2018 and 2021, dismissed more than 23,000 teachers, including a former National President of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), during a controversial screening exercise.
Suleiman explained that the present administration has so far reinstated head teachers, administrative personnel, and science teachers who were affected by the mass sack, stressing that efforts to correct the injustices of the past remain ongoing.
On the implementation of the new minimum wage, the NLC chairman revealed that the Governor has already approved and commenced payment of ₦72,000 to workers on levels 1–7.
“We commend His Excellency for taking this bold step and ensuring that lower cadre workers benefit immediately. However, we are still in talks with government over consequential adjustments for senior staff,” Suleiman stated.
He further disclosed that Kaduna State would require over ₦1.2 billion monthly to fully implement the wage increase across all categories of workers.
The labour leader also lauded Governor Sani for deploying 20 buses to provide free transportation for workers and students, describing the intervention as timely in easing the burden of fuel subsidy removal.
Meanwhile, our correspondent reports that NGIJ members are engaging stakeholders and administering questionnaires across the 23 local government areas as part of the ongoing Kaduna Governance Assessment exercise.
