NIPOST Imposes $80 Customs Fee On All Packages Sent To The US
Beginning August 29, 2025, Nigerians will be required to pay a $80 customs duty—or its naira equivalent—for every package sent to the United States, the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) announced on Friday.
In a circular issued by the agency, NIPOST clarified that this new prepaid customs charge will apply to all postal shipments headed to the US, excluding letters and documents, which remain exempt from the fee.
The policy shift stems from a recent Executive Order in the United States, which eliminates the de minimis exemption for international postal shipments.
“As mandated by the Executive Order, starting August 29, 2025, all postal items destined for the US—except letters and documents—must include a prepaid customs duty of $80 (or the equivalent in naira) at the time of acceptance in Nigeria,” the agency stated.
NIPOST also noted that global logistics have been impacted, with air and cargo carriers implementing stricter measures for US-bound shipments. These changes may result in longer transit and processing times, potentially causing delivery delays. Additionally, all items shipped to the US will be subject to customs inspections upon arrival.
To manage the impact of these new regulations, NIPOST said it is working closely with the Universal Postal Union (UPU), US Customs and Border Protection (CBP), and airline partners to minimize service disruptions and maintain service quality.
“Despite these global regulatory changes, NIPOST remains dedicated to delivering secure, dependable, and efficient postal and courier services,” the statement concluded.
