Nine killed in Borno bus stop explosion, others injured

At least nine people have been reported dead following the detonation of an improvised explosive device (IED) at a local bus stop in Mairari village, located in Guzamala Local Government Area of Borno State.
The tragic incident occurred around 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, leaving several others wounded. According to reports, the victims were passengers waiting to board commercial vehicles when the device exploded.
Confirming the attack on Sunday, Speaker of the Borno State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Abdulkarim Lawan, described the incident as devastating. “It is unfortunate that nine of my resilient constituents were killed by planted IEDs while waiting to board vehicles at a local bus stop in Mairari village,” he said.
He offered prayers for the deceased and the injured, who were evacuated to medical facilities in Monguno and Maiduguri for treatment.
Lawan also expressed concern over the deteriorating security situation in the area. He noted that Mairari village, once resettled under civil authority, has been repeatedly targeted by Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgents, leading to repeated displacements.
“Terrorists who have been monitoring the movements of returnees and farmers planted the explosives that killed these innocent people,” he added.
The Speaker extended condolences to the bereaved families and called on the military and relevant security agencies to intensify efforts to restore peace in Guzamala, particularly in Gudumbali and Mairari, which remain under insurgent control and without civil governance.
