Nigerian scientist beats 5, 575 others to win 2018 World Research Work on Trypanosomiasis
A Nigerian scientist, Dr Musa Danjuma has won the 2018 World Championship Research Work on Trypanosomiasis
Trypanosomiasis also known as sleeping disease is found predominantly in Africa and the American continents and caused by a parasite named Trypanosoma brucei rhodesiense carried by the tsetse fly.
A statement by the International Agency for Standards and Ratings, organiser of the championship says research article of the Nigerian scientist is best among 5, 575 nominations from 67 countries
While describing Dr Musa as the father of modern Epidemiology in trypanosomiasis, the agency said the Nigerian scientist is an important asset to Nigeria and the world.
Dr Musa Danjuma, a fellow at the Directorate of Microbiology, International Agency for Standards and Ratings is a Principal Medical research Officer with the Nigerian Institute for Trypanosomiasis Research, NITR, Kaduna
According research figures, Worldwide, approximately 25,000 new cases of both East and West African Trypanosomiasis are reported to the World Health Organisation each year. However, many cases are not reported due to a lack of infrastructure and the true number of new cases is feared to be much higher.
