Nigeria Woos Germany With Skilled Workforce

…Seeks Stronger Economic Partnership

Nigeria has called for deeper economic cooperation with Germany, offering the country’s growing pool of skilled young professionals as a potential response to labour and skills shortages in the German economy.

The Nigerian Ambassador to Germany, Senator Ita Enang, made the call in Berlin during an event marking Nigeria’s 66th Independence Anniversary on October 1, 2026.

Enang said qualified Nigerians in fields including engineering, medicine, technology, vocational training and academia could contribute to Germany’s economy through structured employment and skilled migration programmes.

to the ambassador, Germany’s industrial strength and identified skills gaps provide opportunities for mutually beneficial cooperation between both countries.

“This presents opportunities for young, skilled and well-endowed citizens of the world to seek opportunities in the country. For Nigeria, this is preparation meeting opportunities,” he said.

Enang said the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu was repositioning Nigeria’s education and training system to produce professionals equipped with relevant skills for the domestic and international labour markets.

He identified medicine, engineering, technology, academia and the creative industries among the sectors where Nigeria is developing specialised skills and institutions.

“These highly engaged citizens are active in the Nigerian labour economy and available for the German economy. And we are engaging,” the ambassador said.

He also called for expanded Nigeria-Germany cooperation in green energy, technological innovation, infrastructure, education, creative industries, vocational training and skilled circular migration.

The envoy described Germany as a longstanding development partner and said bilateral relations had expanded beyond traditional cooperation to include trade and investment, energy transition, educational exchanges and sustainable development.

He said stronger collaboration in emerging sectors could help both countries build greater economic resilience and create new opportunities for their citizens.

Enang further highlighted Nigeria’s strategic relationship with Germany within the European Union, stressing that the partnership remained important to Nigeria’s national development agenda.

He also commended Nigerians living in Germany and other parts of Europe, describing them as “proud ambassadors” of the country.

The ambassador urged Nigerians in the diaspora to remain united, law-abiding and committed to making positive contributions to their host communities while maintaining strong links with Nigeria.

Enang reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to multilateral cooperation, African unity, regional security and socioeconomic integration through institutions including the United Nations, African Union, World Trade Organisation and African Continental Free Trade Area.

He said Nigeria remained committed to strengthening its longstanding friendship with Germany and expanding areas of cooperation that could deliver tangible benefits to both countries.

The ambassador also referenced President Tinubu’s Independence Day message, saying it underscored the importance of confidence, collective determination and continued focus on Nigeria’s development.

He concluded by proposing a toast to the enduring friendship between Nigeria and Germany, African unity and Nigeria’s continued development.

“Long live the Federal Republic of Nigeria! Long live the Federal Republic of Germany! Long live African Unity!” Enang declared.
