Nigeria Secures Permanent Seat on African Central Bank Board at AU Summit

Nigeria has secured a permanent seat on the Board of the African Central Bank following deliberations at the just-concluded 39th Session of the Executive Council of the (AU).

The development was announced by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which described the outcome as a major diplomatic and institutional achievement that reinforces Nigeria’s leadership role in Africa’s economic integration and governance architecture.

According to the statement, the decision also extends Nigeria’s representation to the Board of the Technical Convergence Committee of the — the precursor institution to the establishment of the African Central Bank.

The Ministry noted that the permanent seat underscores Nigeria’s technical capacity, economic weight, and sustained commitment to advancing Africa’s monetary integration agenda.

Peace and Security Gains

In the area of peace and security, candidates jointly endorsed by the (ECOWAS) were successfully elected to the AU Peace and Security Council.

Officials said the outcome reflects cohesion among ECOWAS Member States and the region’s collective resolve to promote stability, conflict prevention, and cooperative security across the continent.

Leadership on Democratic Governance

Nigeria also took a leading role in advancing democratic governance at the summit by convening a Ministerial High-Level Panel Discussion on Regional Partnerships for Democracy.

The event attracted ministers, senior government officials, and delegates from across Africa and the international community. Discussions focused on strengthening democratic institutions, fostering inclusive governance, and enhancing regional collaboration to safeguard democratic values.

The Ministry stated that Nigeria’s engagements at the Executive Council session reaffirm the country’s dedication to the ideals of the African Union, particularly in promoting economic integration, institutional development, peace, security, and democratic governance.

“The Federal Government of Nigeria remains committed to working collaboratively with Member States and regional bodies to advance Africa’s shared prosperity and sustainable development,” the statement read.
