Nigeria secures 24 Italian M-346FA Fighter Jets in historic military deal
Nigeria has secured the purchase of 24 M-346FA fighter aircraft from Italy, marking the largest military jet acquisition ever undertaken by a West African country.
The deal represents a major boost to the combat and air-defense capabilities of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), significantly expanding its fleet of modern fighter aircraft. The M-346FA, a light combat fighter developed by Italian aerospace firm Leonardo, is designed for both air-to-ground and air-to-air missions, as well as advanced pilot training.
Security analysts say the acquisition underscores Nigeria’s renewed commitment to strengthening its military capacity amid persistent security challenges, including terrorism, banditry, and transnational crime. The aircraft are expected to enhance close air support operations, reconnaissance missions, and rapid response capabilities across the country.
The M-346FA is equipped with advanced avionics, radar systems, precision-guided munitions, and electronic warfare capabilities, making it suitable for modern asymmetric and conventional operations. Its dual role as a fighter and trainer is also expected to improve pilot proficiency and reduce operational costs.
With the purchase, Nigeria becomes one of the largest operators of the M-346FA globally and the leading jet combat power in West Africa, reinforcing its strategic position in regional security and peacekeeping efforts.
Details on delivery timelines and financing arrangements have not yet been officially disclosed.
