Nigeria Police Embraces Artificial Intelligence, Charts New Course for Modern Policing
Abuja, Nigeria – June 4, 2026 – The Nigeria Police Force (NPF) has taken a significant step toward modernizing law enforcement operations with the successful conclusion of the Second AI-POL Leadership Dialogue Workshop on Advancing Innovation, Governance, and the Responsible Use of Artificial Intelligence in Law Enforcement.
The landmark workshop, held in Abuja on June 3, brought together top law enforcement officials, technology experts, and international partners to discuss the growing role of artificial intelligence (AI) in policing and public safety.
During the event, participants examined practical applications of AI in security operations, explored the challenges associated with emerging technologies, and reviewed global best practices aimed at enhancing policing efficiency and accountability.
Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, emphasized the importance of the discussions, noting that artificial intelligence is no longer a concept for the future but a reality that is already transforming security agencies worldwide.
According to the IGP, the workshop underscored the urgent need for the Nigeria Police Force to embrace innovation while ensuring responsible and ethical use of AI-driven technologies.
He expressed appreciation to participants, facilitators, experts, and development partners for their contributions to the success of the dialogue and reaffirmed the Force’s commitment to advancing the initiative.
A major highlight of the workshop was a presentation on the outcomes of the 5th Global Meeting for AI and Law Enforcement, which identified Nigeria as a priority partner for the African AI Policing Pilot programme.
The recognition is expected to strengthen the country’s role in shaping the future of AI-enabled policing across the continent.
Participants were encouraged to apply the knowledge and insights gained during the workshop within their various commands and departments, translating discussions into practical reforms and improved policing strategies.
The Nigeria Police Force reiterated its commitment to leveraging technology to build safer communities while maintaining transparency, accountability, and public trust.
