Nigeria Army Pleads With Ogun Government To Repair Bad Roads

By ABIODUN JIMOH, ABEOKUTA

Worried at the deplorable conditions of roads in its community, the Nigeria Army has appealed to Ogun State government to assist the community by fixing the Lafenwa -Rounder Road which has suffered government neglect over the years.

The appeal was made by Major General Olu Irefin, General Officer Commander (GOC), 81 Division, Nigeria Army, Lagos when he led troops of 35 Artillery Brigade, Alamala Barracks, Abeokuta to carry out palliative works on bad portions of the road as part of its social development programme codenamed ‘Operation Crocodile Smile.

General Irefin while appreciating the support of the community, after his men graded the bad portion of the road noted that the palliative work was done to help members of the community move freely, as Christmas and new year festivities draw closer.

The GOC said: “This is a civil-military programme to help our neighbours who are assisting us to be able to move freely within our communities.

“We do sincerely hope that Governor Prince Dapo Abiodun, who has the interest of the people at heart, and very focus will look into this direction to help in fixing this road. In the long run it helps to shorten our time to react to situations if and when necessary.”

Furthermore, the Army General remarked that Operation Crocodile Smile was designed to protect citizens from activities of criminals operating within communities in the state.

He however read the riot act to criminals waiting to perpetrate crime during the festive period to have a change of mind, otherwise be ready to face the wrath of the military.

“Operation Crocodile Smile is an exercise designed by the military and other civil organisations in aid of civilian government to checkmate the activities of miscreants and criminals perpetrating all kinds of crime within Ogun State.

“The aim of the exercise is to check crimes and criminal activities and ensure that people are able to live, sleep and go about their normal businesses without interference.

“Law abiding citizens have nothing to fear but if you are miscreants or on the other side of the law, then be ready for us.”

In a related development, the spokesperson of construction company, CCECC, Jeje Peter, confirmed that the Lafenwa -Rounder road is in bad condition and is becoming increasingly impassable for commuters.

He commended the efforts of the Nigerian army in facilitating palliative works on the road. “With the palliative measure things will go on well the way they want it.”
