NHRC Pays Tribute to Solomon Arase

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has expressed profound sorrow over the death of former Inspector General of Police, Dr. Solomon Arase, describing him as a staunch advocate for human rights and a respected ally of the Commission.

In a condolence message issued on Monday, the Executive Secretary of the NHRC, Dr. Tony Ojukwu, conveyed sympathies on behalf of the Commission’s management and staff to Arase’s family, colleagues, and the Nigeria Police Force.

“Dr. Arase was not only a distinguished law enforcement officer, but also a visionary leader who brought a human rights perspective to policing in Nigeria,” Ojukwu said. “He spearheaded citizen-focused reforms and championed initiatives that strengthened accountability and transparency within the force.”

One of his most notable contributions, according to the NHRC, was the establishment of the Police Complaint Response Unit—a platform that significantly improved the handling of public grievances and promoted trust between citizens and the police.

Ojukwu also commended Arase’s commitment to intelligence-led policing, which prioritized investigations before arrests—reinforcing the constitutional principle of presumption of innocence. He noted that this approach sharply contrasted with current practices, where arrests often precede any form of investigation, undermining citizens’ rights.

Even after his tenure as IGP, Arase continued to push for reforms as Chairman of the Police Service Commission, remaining a key figure in efforts to modernize policing in Nigeria.

“His legacy transcends his official roles,” Ojukwu added. “Dr. Arase was a valued member of the broader human rights community. His tireless efforts to uphold the dignity and rights of Nigerians have left an indelible mark on both policing and human rights advocacy in the country.”

The Commission praised Arase’s humility, intellect, and unwavering commitment to justice, noting that his passing is a great loss to the nation.

“May his soul rest in peace, and may his loved ones find strength and solace in the lasting impact of his life and service,” the statement concluded.
