NCP Demands for immediate proportional Representation

By Ene Ikpa

The National conscience party NCP has made an urgent call for an immediate proportional representation in Government.

The national chairman of the party Dr Yunusa Tanko made this known at the commemoration of  NCP 25 years anniversary on Tuesday in Abuja.
Tanko who described the NCP as a  party of the downtrodden , formed by the late legal luminary chief Gani Fawehinmi SAN on the 1st of October 1994 and proclaimed as a political party in 2003, noted that the party has come of age in that regard and demands for proportional representation.
His words; “We have watched with total dismay, how our politics has taken a downward trend, from violence to money politics, from intimidation to cross carpeting , from manipulation to voters apathy, hence the need for an electoral reform that will be all inclusive . Proportional representation comes to mind.
“Proportional Representation system is often credited with producing more equitable outcome between political parties and encouraging wider social group representation than the major system”
According to Tanko, proportional representation will instill greater trust , efficacy and faith in the political system. Citizens that are disadvantaged by majority rules (political minorities) will have a relatively greater shift toward positive attitudes and democracy, following a transition from a majoritarian system to proportional representation.
“Proportional Representation will take care of nomadic politicking, reduce money politics, wider representation, inclusiveness for women, youths and person’s with disability, ensure vote counts and above all political party supremacy baseline ideology”.
He strongly advocated for a change in the system and calls for support from all for the survival of democracy and advancement of the electoral system.
