NACLFON Urges FG, INEC to Curb Underage, Non-Nigerian Voting Ahead of 2027 Elections
The National APC Christian Leaders Forum of Nigeria (NACLFON) has called on the Federal Government and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to take urgent steps to safeguard the integrity of Nigeria’s electoral system ahead of the 2027 general elections.
In a press release issued by its Publicity Secretary, the group raised concerns over the continued incidence of underage voting and the alleged participation of non-Nigerians in the country’s electoral process, particularly in parts of Northern Nigeria.
NACLFON emphasized that Nigeria’s democracy must be anchored on transparency, credibility, and strict adherence to constitutional provisions, warning that any compromise in the electoral system could undermine national sovereignty and erode public confidence in governance.
Highlighting its key concerns, the group noted that reports and past evidence indicate that minors have been registered and allowed to vote, in violation of the law which sets the minimum voting age at 18. It also expressed worries about the infiltration of the voter register by non-Nigerians in border communities, potentially influencing election outcomes.
The forum further decried weak enforcement mechanisms, stating that despite existing legal frameworks, there has been little accountability for individuals involved in electoral malpractice.
To address these challenges, NACLFON recommended a comprehensive, technology-driven audit of the national voter register, including biometric verification, to eliminate underage and non-citizen registrations. It also called for stronger collaboration between INEC and security agencies to verify citizenship status, particularly in border areas.
Other recommendations include strict prosecution of offenders, deployment of advanced biometric systems and real-time verification tools, as well as nationwide public awareness campaigns to educate citizens on the dangers and legal implications of electoral fraud.
Describing credible elections as a “patriotic obligation,” NACLFON stressed that the integrity of the 2027 polls will play a crucial role in shaping Nigeria’s future.
“The world is watching, and Nigerians deserve an electoral system that reflects the true will of the people,” the statement read.
The group reaffirmed its commitment to Nigeria’s unity, peace, and progress, urging authorities to act decisively to eliminate all forms of electoral malpractice.
