Momentum building as PDP faces further cracks

By Sunday Oladapo

In a development that could further destabilize the opposition, multiple sources within the PDP have confirmed that Bayelsa State Governor Douye Diri and Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri are “seriously considering” leaving the PDP.

Top-level negotiations are reportedly ongoing behind the scenes, with pressure mounting from within the APC to lure more high-profile defectors ahead of the 2027 election cycle.

Party insiders say both governors are feeling isolated within the PDP and have been approached by APC emissaries with assurances of influence and security if they defect.

“These are not just rumours anymore — the groundwork is being laid,” one top APC strategist told reporters. “The momentum is clearly on our side.”

PDP Under Pressure

The latest wave of defections threatens to further weaken the PDP, which has been rocked by internal disputes and an exodus of key figures in recent months. Although the party has set up reconciliation committees and threatened legal action against defectors, it is struggling to contain the defections or present a unified front.

The potential loss of three sitting governors — Mbah, Diri, and Fintiri — would be a significant blow to the party’s national standing and electoral prospects.

APC Celebrates Growing Influence

For the APC, the high-profile welcome of Governor Mbah is being touted as a symbol of the party’s growing dominance, especially in regions like the South-East, traditionally viewed as opposition territory.

“Tuesday’s event is not just about Enugu,” one APC governor said. “It’s about showing that the APC is the future — and that anyone who wants to be politically relevant in 2027 needs to be with us.”
