Mokwa Flooding: IPCR sympathises with flood victims’ families, Niger State Government

Director General of the Institute for Peace and Conflict Resolution (IPCR), Dr. Joseph Ochogwu has extended sympathies to the families of the victims affected by the recent devastating flooding in Niger State, Nigeria.

The flood, which occurred on May 29, 2025, has been reported to have claimed over 150 lives and displaced thousands of people, leaving many families without homes, livelihoods, or access to basic necessities.

The flooding, suspected to have resulted from the release of water from the Kainji Dam, has brought untold hardship to the people of Niger State.

The affected communities are in dire need of humanitarian assistance, including food, shelter, medical care, and emotional support. The IPCR while recognizing the severity of the situation and the immense challenges faced by the victims and their families in a condolence message expressed sadness over the loss of lives and property, emphasizing the need for collective action to support the affected communities.

The IPCR called for empathy and solidarity in times of crisis, stating that the flooding in Niger State has, however, underscored the need for timely and effective humanitarian assistance.

It called for action from government agencies, international organisations, and civil society groups to provide support to those affected.

The institute’s emphasis on the importance of humanitarian assistance and reflected its commitment to promoting human security and well-being.
