Labour Party Blasts Tinubu Over Frequent Travels, Says Nigeria Needs Resident, Not Nomadic President
The Labour Party (LP) has faulted President Bola Tinubu’s latest foreign trip, describing his constant absence from Nigeria as insensitive to the nation’s worsening economic and security woes.
In a statement on Saturday, the party’s Interim National Publicity Secretary, Tony Akeni, said Tinubu’s decision to embark on a 10-day vacation in France and the UK showed he was increasingly avoiding the hard work of governing at home.
Akeni noted that under Tinubu’s watch, 135 million Nigerians had been pushed into poverty within just 18 months due to harsh economic policies, while insecurity continued to claim about 57 lives daily — figures he argued were higher than casualties in Ukraine’s ongoing war with Russia.
“Since taking office in May 2023, President Tinubu has spent nearly 160 days abroad. This record paints him less as a leader tackling problems and more as a nomadic president who governs from the skies,” Akeni said.
The party further criticised what it called a culture of “medical and social tourism” among APC leaders, pointing to billions budgeted for the Aso Rock Clinic that allegedly vanish yearly without equipping the facility.
According to Akeni, the LP would prioritize building a functional healthcare system and governance that stays rooted in Nigeria if elected in 2027.
