Labour Leaders speaks on the status of Port Harcourt Refinery

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) President, Joe Ajaero, and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) President, Festus Osifo, have confirmed that the Old Port Harcourt Refinery has resumed operations and is producing high-quality petroleum products.

The announcement followed an inspection tour of the rehabilitated facility on Monday, where both union leaders, accompanied by a delegation oflabourr representatives, assessed the refinery’s functionality. According to Ajaero and Osifo, the inspection was thorough, with a focus on verifying the facility’s operational status and ensuring the quality of its output met global standards.

“This is a significant milestone in Nigeria’s energy sector. The Port Harcourt Refinery is back on stream, and we are pleased to see it producing petroleum products that meet high-quality standards,” Ajaero stated during a press briefing after the tour.

Osifo echoed similar sentiments, highlighting the importance of the refinery’s restoration for the nation’s economy. “The revival of this refinery will reduce dependence on imported petroleum products, save foreign exchange, and create job opportunities for Nigerians,” he said.

The Port Harcourt Refinery, one of Nigeria’s key refineries, had been undergoing extensive rehabilitation to address years of operational challenges.

Its return to production is viewed as a pivotal development for the country’s downstream petroleum sector.
Labour leaders also stressed the need for continuous maintenance and government investment in other refineries across the country to ensure sustained functionality and reduced reliance on fuel imports.

They called on stakeholders to prioritize transparency and accountability in the management of the nation’s refining assets.
