Kano Governor Abba Yusuf set to defect from NNPP to APC, Deputy faces impeachment — Report

Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State is reportedly preparing to defect from the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the first week of January.

According to an exclusive report by Daily Nigerian, the planned defection will take place without the support of former Kano State governor and national leader of the NNPP, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, who is said to have rejected the move.

The report also disclosed that Governor Yusuf currently controls 25 members of the Kano State House of Assembly elected on the NNPP platform, out of the original 27, following the death of two lawmakers. This majority is expected to ease his transition to the APC.

In a related development, Governor Yusuf is also said to have resolved to part ways with his deputy, Aminu Abdulsalam. Abdulsalam is reportedly set to be impeached to clear the way for the appointment of Murtala Sule-Garo, the APC’s deputy governorship candidate in the 2023 election, as the new deputy governor.

The development, if confirmed, would mark a major political realignment in Kano State and significantly weaken the NNPP’s foothold in the state, while strengthening the APC ahead of future electoral contests.

As of the time of filing this report, neither the Kano State Government nor the NNPP leadership has issued an official statement on the reported defection and planned impeachment.
