Kano government promises 20% salary increase for teachers

The Kano state government has promised to increase the salaries of teacher working in the state by 20%.
The state government also promised to approve car and bicycle loans for the teachers.
Speaking on the government policies, the chairman of the committee on the new education policy, Professor Garba Shehu, said the policy had already been laid down.
He said members of his committee were already in Zaria to fine-tune the policy and form a draft earlier made available.
He said: “The policy is being laid down. We are coming up with it within the year. We hope to finish and make everything available so that it will be captured in next year’s budget.”
The professor added that in the new policy there will be an increase of teachers’ salaries by at least 20 per cent of their basic salary.
Shehu said apart from the pay raise, which is expected to commence in 2019, the committee is also suggesting other welfare packages. These packages, he said, will include: like timely promotion, provision of staff quarters, loans for vehicles or motorcycles, and other incentives that could make teaching attractive.
