June 12: FG cancelled military parade
In a significant departure from tradition, the Federal Government has officially cancelled the annual military parade scheduled for this year’s Democracy Day celebration on Thursday, June 12, 2025.
The announcement came from the Inter-Ministerial Committee coordinating the Democracy Day programme, confirming that the parade—typically a central feature of the national event—will not take place this year.
Instead, the day will begin with a national broadcast by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu at 7 a.m., during which he is expected to reflect on Nigeria’s democratic journey, address the state of the nation, and outline ongoing reforms aimed at strengthening democratic institutions and promoting good governance.
At noon, President Tinubu will address a special joint session of the National Assembly, focusing on democratic progress, national unity, and efforts to revitalize key sectors for improved governance.
A public lecture is scheduled for 4 p.m. at the State House Conference Centre in Abuja. Titled “Strengthening Democracy Through Lasting Reforms,” the event will feature leading political figures, policymakers, and civil society representatives discussing the country’s democratic milestones and ongoing challenges.
While no official reason was given for the parade’s cancellation, a source from the presidency suggested it may be related to last year’s incident in which President Tinubu briefly slipped while attempting to mount a ceremonial vehicle at Eagle Square. He quickly regained his balance and completed the event without issue.
Despite speculation, government officials affirm that President Tinubu remains in good health and fully committed to advancing Nigeria’s democratic values.
Nigerians are encouraged to tune in for the President’s address and engage in national conversations focused on democratic growth and institutional reform.
