International Women’s Day: Betta Edu Calls for Greater Empowerment of Women, Support for Vulnerable

Former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Social Development, Betta Edu, has called for stronger efforts to empower women and provide greater support for vulnerable groups as the world marks International Women’s Day 2026.

In a statement commemorating the global celebration, Edu said the day offers an opportunity to recognise the impact of women who continue to uplift communities, empower others and contribute to social and economic development across the world.

She noted that she joined Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, and other influential women globally in celebrating the achievements of women and their contributions to society.

Edu described the 2026 theme, “Give to Gain,” as a powerful reminder that building a just and prosperous society requires deliberate efforts to promote the rights, equality and empowerment of women and girls.

According to her, investing in women and supporting their aspirations are essential steps toward creating opportunities that enable them to thrive and make meaningful contributions to national and global development.

She praised the resilience and strength of women who continue to break barriers and drive positive change, noting that women remain central to social transformation, economic growth and family stability.

Edu also urged governments, organisations and individuals to renew their commitment to expanding opportunities for women and girls while strengthening support systems for vulnerable people.

“Empowering women is not only a moral responsibility but also a pathway to sustainable development and inclusive progress,” she said.

She added that the global celebration should inspire continued collaboration aimed at building societies where every woman and girl can live with dignity, opportunity and hope.
