Interfaith Iftar: Tinubu Charges Governors to Uplift the Downtrodden

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday in Abuja urged leaders across religious and political lines to deepen their commitment to the welfare of the poor and underprivileged by implementing policies that directly benefit people at the grassroots.

This was contained in a statement issued by Bayo Onanuga
Special Adviser to the President Information & Strategy.

Speaking while hosting state governors to an interfaith breaking of the fast at the Presidential Villa, the President noted that the overlap of Ramadan and Lent highlights shared values of sacrifice, discipline, and compassion across both faiths.

He said the sacred seasons present a unique opportunity for reflection and renewed dedication to improving the lives of citizens, particularly the most vulnerable.

“It is a privilege to gather once again in gratitude to Almighty God for preserving our lives to witness another Ramadan,” the President said, adding that the convergence with the Christian Lenten season reinforces the need for unity, love, and collective responsibility.

President Tinubu commended the governors for their efforts so far but stressed that more must be done to tackle poverty and expand opportunities, especially for young people.

He encouraged leaders to foster inclusiveness and strengthen unity during the period of fasting, urging them to create space for younger generations to thrive.

The President also acknowledged the presence of Abba Kabir Yusuf and called for moderation in handling political tensions, while praising Babagana Umara Zulum for his inclusive outreach efforts to both Muslims and Christians during the fasting period.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to national development, President Tinubu said recent progress across states reflects growing dedication to governance, but urged leaders to intensify efforts in reaching underserved communities.

He expressed optimism about the country’s economic direction, stating that Nigeria is emerging from a period of uncertainty, while pledging continued support for job creation and security reforms.

The President reiterated plans to establish state police as part of broader efforts to address insecurity, emphasizing that security remains essential for economic growth and social stability.

“Development must transcend religion, compassion must rise above tribe, and opportunity must not be limited by status,” he said, underscoring his resolve to deliver on promises made to Nigerians.

Speaking on behalf of the Nigeria Governors’ Forum, Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, commended the President for promoting unity in a period marked by religious convergence.

He described the simultaneous observance of Ramadan and Lent as a rare and divinely inspired moment, calling on Nigerians to rise above religious and ethnic divisions.

Governor Uzodimma also praised the President’s leadership and collaborative engagement with governors, noting that the period of fasting serves as a reminder to prioritise the needs of the less privileged.
