According to the organisation, kidney disease is a potential complication of diabetes over long periods of time.

It noted that diabetes may account for more than one-third of chronic kidney disease.

it said: “diabetes is a condition that impairs the body’s ability to process blood sugar. It is also the leading cause of kidney disease, which some may refer to as diabetic nephropathy.

Foods suitable for diabetes and kidney disease, it said are fruits such as berries, grapes, cherries
apples, and plums.

Others it said are vegetables such ugwu, onions, eggplant,
most greens sautēed.

“Eggs, unsalted seafood, and lean meats, such as poultry and fish, while whole grain breads, unsalted crackers, and pasta, water, and unsweetened herbs are also suitable for diabetes”, it noted.

According to the organisation, foods to limit diabetes health are foods high in sugar as they can cause spikes in blood sugar.

“It is best for a person to reserve these foods for when they need to correct a hypoglycemic episode. limit carbohydrates: where possible, replace some options with complex carbs, which are less likely to cause”.

While noting that foods high in potassium and phosphorus should be limited for kidney health, it stated that the kidneys may not be able to filter out excess amounts of these minerals.

“High phosphorus levels can result in the body removing calcium from bones, making them weaker”.

This, it said, can also lead to dangerous calcium deposits that can increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, or even death.

“High potassium levels might cause a person to experience weakness, numbness, and tingling. In some cases, they may also cause an irregular heartbeat or a heart attack”.

It however advised on lifestyle changes to improve kidney health which include reaching or maintaining a moderate body weight, engaging in physical activity regularly, quitting smoking, limiting or avoiding alcohol consumption, modifying the diet, for example, by eating less salt and protein and getting sufficient sleep.
