Institutional Transition of the Sundiata Post Intelligence Unit to the Sundiata Post Knowledge Lab: Expanding the Mandate of an African Media–Intelligence–Knowledge Institution

Sundiata Post Media Ltd formally reconstituted its research arm, transitioning the Sundiata Post Intelligence Unit (SPIU) into the Sundiata Post Knowledge Lab (SPKL). This organisational evolution institutionalises an expanded research mandate that moves beyond intelligence analysis and policy interpretation toward original theoretical development, empirical investigation, quantitative modelling and systematic scholarly knowledge production.
The transition is designed to enhance engagement with global open-science infrastructures, facilitate international research partnerships, and establish a durable platform for African-generated knowledge relevant to Nigeria, Africa and the Global South.

Background and Institutional Trajectory

Established in April 2026, the SPIU was conceived as a research mechanism linking contemporaneous journalism with structural analysis of security, sovereignty, governance and public policy. Subsequent intellectual production — notably the conceptual frameworks of the Insecurity Triad, the Trinity of Sovereignty Decay (TSD) and the Decoupling Sovereignty Index (DSI) — demonstrated the capacity of an independent newsroom to generate theoretical constructs, analytical instruments and research outputs capable of contributing to scholarly and policy discourse. The transition to SPKL formalises this expanded intellectual mission.

Strategic Rationale

Three interrelated imperatives underpin the change:
•Expansion of the Knowledge-Production Mandate
The Knowledge Lab designation reframes the unit as a dedicated research environment oriented toward conceptual innovation, empirical investigation, theoretical development and analytical modelling. Intellectual work now encompasses the formulation of original frameworks, production of research papers, analysis of empirical evidence and construction of instruments for examining complex political, security and governance phenomena.

•Alignment with Global Open-Science Infrastructures
SPKL provides a consistent institutional identity for working papers, research datasets, policy briefs and related scholarly outputs. Adoption of persistent identifiers (including Digital Object Identifiers) and engagement with scholarly repositories and research networks are intended to enhance the discoverability, traceability, accessibility and long-term visibility of African-generated research, while improving attribution and metadata consistency.

•Facilitation of International Research Partnerships
The redesignation offers a clearer institutional framework for collaboration with universities, research centres, philanthropic foundations, international grantmakers and other knowledge-producing organisations. It reduces ambiguity regarding the breadth of the organisation’s mandate in scholarly research, theoretical innovation, empirical analysis and open knowledge production.

The Sundiata Post Model and Implications for Newsroom Research

SPKL functions as the flagship research vehicle of the Sundiata Post Model (SPM). The model advances the proposition that independent newsrooms may operate not solely as producers and distributors of news, but also as originators of theoretical frameworks, generators of research evidence and contributors to peer-reviewable scholarship. This approach seeks to integrate journalism with systematic inquiry, research with knowledge preservation, and African intellectual production with international scholarly conversations.

Implementation

The transition takes immediate effect across research operations, digital publishing workflows and the institutional identification of new research outputs. Existing repository records and research metadata will be updated as appropriate. Continuity of ongoing security analyses, policy briefs and related initiatives is maintained under the editorial and research direction of the Knowledge Lab, now operating under an expanded mandate for theoretical development, empirical investigation, scholarly dissemination and international collaboration.

Concluding Statement

The reconstitution of SPIU as SPKL constitutes both an epistemic and institutional elevation. It positions an independent African media organisation to generate original knowledge, develop conceptual tools for the analysis of statecraft, security and governance, and contribute African perspectives to the intellectual frameworks through which the Global South is understood.
