Insecurity: Desperate politicians working against Buhari’s administration – Malami

Attorney General of the Federation AGF, Abubakar Malami, SAN, has stated that

some corrupt politicians with contrary positions are involved in the present security problems of the nation, adding that they desperately attempt to discredit all the gains made by the present administration of President Muhammadu Buhari.

Buttressing the recent stand of President Muhammadu Buhari on the killings allegedly perpetrated by some desperate politicians in the country, Malami opined: “As we approach another General Election in 2019, it is easy to see the hands of corrupt politicians with contrary positions in our present security problems as they desperately attempt to discredit all the gains made by this administration, for pure political gain. “We must resist these negative tendencies which is detrimental to our collective well being”, he insisted.

He made this disclosure at an emergency High Level Dialogue on law, justice and security in Nigeria, an event organised by the Ministry of Justice recently in Abuja.

Speaking further at the event, the AGF while identifying that the dialogue would set a major discourse and go a long way in addressing the national security threats through the instrumentality of law, stressed that it would equally seek ways to provide needed platforms to deliberate on a mounting security challenges in the country.

The AGF, elucidating further on the theme: ‘Law, Justice and Security’, noted that the law provides legal basis for the security architecture of Nigeria through the Constitutional allocation of duties and obligations to the different tiers of Government. He added that law also plays a critical process through the enactment of Appropriation Acts to fund the security needs of the country and its components.

He made reference to the issue of Insecurity challenge confronting the nation, saying that Nigeria needs to adequately fund her security needs and its components.

He said: “We have a greater responsibility to tackle insecurity as custodians of law. We cannot afford to fold our arms and allow insecurity to prevail. Kidnapping, cattle rustling issues are a source of concern to us”.

Malami however appealed to religious leaders and press to recover their progressive roles in fighting together the battle.

The Solicitor-General of the Federation and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, Dayo Apata, esq, in his opening speech, emphasised some major roles while the AGF has been playing in addressing the security threats by issuing of fiat to the Attorneys-General to prosecute federal offences.

In his words: “I must appreciate the AGF on his efforts which include the adaptation of the national policy on prosecution and code of conduct and guidelines for prosecutors which are all geared towards  a robust criminal justice administration”.

The lead speaker, also speaking on a paper entitled ‘A plea for good governance’ at the event, Professor of Law in University of Lagos, Akin Oyebode reiterated the need for Nigeria to comply with all international law instruments which it had freely assumed.

Oyebode, while further emphasising on the impact of good governance as related to how the nation can surmount the challenges of insecurity, he maintained that “Nigeria would reassume her position as a fitting member of the international community and the world’s largest concentration of black people with a manifest destiny to lead and rescue Africa and the entire Black race”.

He however called on Federal Government to confront head-on forces that threaten to commit acts that can lead to security failure and push the country along the path of mortality of the Nigerian State.
