IGP Submits Framework on State Police Creation to Senate

The Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has submitted a comprehensive framework to the Nigerian Senate for the establishment of state police across the country.

The move is seen as a significant step toward decentralising policing and addressing growing security challenges nationwide.

According to sources, the proposed framework outlines the structure, operational guidelines, and coordination mechanisms that would govern the creation and functioning of state police formations alongside federal law enforcement agencies.

The submission comes amid ongoing national conversations on the need for state policing as a means of improving local security, enhancing rapid response, and tackling region-specific threats more effectively.

If adopted, the framework is expected to provide a legislative foundation for the long-debated reform, potentially reshaping Nigeria’s security architecture.

Deliberations by lawmakers are anticipated in the coming days as the Senate reviews the proposal.
