How Obasanjo secondary school teacher died at 92- Family member

Death of former President, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo secondary school teacher, Pa James Akanbi Popoola has been announced by a member of the family.

Prof Tope Popoola, who broke the news of the 92 years old Pa James, confirmed that he died in his home at Ilaro, few days after he was discharged from the Federal Medical Centre, Abeokuta, Ogun State capital.

The deceased, who was the head of the Popoola family in Ilaro town, Yewa South Local Government Area in the state was one of the teachers that taught Chief Obasanjo during his school days at Baptist Boys High School (BBHS), Abeokuta.

He also taught the likes of Olubara of Ibara, Oba Jacob Omolade; Rear Admiral Adewunmi (rtd)  as well as Prof Saburi Adesanya, former Vice Chancellor of Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) among others at the school.

Prof. Popoola said: “Pa James Popoola died of old age related illness, He had been on admission at the hospital for days, but was discharged last week having showed sign of improve health condition.  The family is consulting to give the erudite teacher, and renowned principal a befitting burial

However, the corpse of the pioneer Principal of Baptist Grammar School, Ibadan, and a teacher at Baptist Grammar School, Iwo, in the then old western region has been deposited at the morgue. He was said to have left behind a wife, who was also a retired teacher, and six children

It could be recalled that Chief Obasanjo and Oba Omolade, his secondary schoolmate, had late last year visited Pa Popoola at his Ilaro home, to check how he was fairing, and also used the occasion to share their experiences while in school under his tutelage
