Grid Collapse Triggers Another Major Blackout

Once again, Nigeria’s national electricity grid suffered a collapse on Wednesday.

According to data from the Independent System Operator (ISO), power generation plummeted from 2,917.83 megawatts (MW) to a mere 1.5MW between 11:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m., confirming a nationwide blackout due to grid failure.

The Abuja Electricity Distribution Company (AEDC) issued a statement to its customers attributing the widespread outage across its coverage area to the grid collapse, which occurred at approximately 11:23 a.m.

“We would like to inform our customers that the current power outage is a result of a loss of supply from the national grid at 11:23 hours today, impacting electricity distribution throughout our network,” the company stated.

“We are in active communication with the appropriate authorities to facilitate the restoration of electricity as soon as the grid is stabilized.

“We appreciate your patience and understanding during this time,” the AEDC added.
