Governor Zulum Mourns Buhari’s Death, Describes It as a National Loss
Borno State Governor, Professor Babagana Umara Zulum, has expressed deep sorrow over the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, describing the news as shocking and a major blow to Nigeria at a crucial point in its democratic journey.
In a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Media and Strategy, Dauda Iliya, Governor Zulum said the death of the former president, though a reminder of the inevitability of mortality, leaves behind a significant void that will be hard to fill.
“It is with deep sadness that I received the news of the passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, who died today, Sunday, July 13, 2025, while undergoing medical treatment in London,” the governor stated.
“On behalf of the government and the people of Borno State, I extend our heartfelt condolences to the family of the late president, and to the people and government of Nigeria—especially those of Katsina State and the Daura Emirate. Our thoughts and prayers are with them in this time of grief.”
Governor Zulum paid tribute to Buhari as a statesman of rare integrity, discipline, and humility, who devoted his life to public service and national unity.
“He was more than a leader; he was a symbol of selfless service. From his early days as a military officer, to becoming the first military governor of the old Borno State in 1976, through to his service as military Head of State and two-term elected President, Buhari left an indelible mark on Nigeria’s history,” Zulum noted.
Highlighting Buhari’s role in the development of Borno and the wider Northeast region, Zulum said the late leader’s impact and support for the state remained visible and enduring.
He recalled Buhari’s last visit to Borno in November 2024, when he came to sympathize with residents affected by a severe flood disaster, describing the visit as further evidence of his continued support for the people.
“As we mourn his passing, we pray Almighty Allah (SWT) forgives his shortcomings and grants him eternal peace in Aljannatul Firdaus,” the governor concluded.
