Governor Sule Directs Immediate Action on Keana Flood Damage

inspects Keana-Abuni-Kanje road

Governor Abdullahi Sule has ordered immediate repairs of the Keana-Giza road, which was completely cut-off by recent devastating floods.

Governor Sule issued the directive during an assessment tour of the flood-ravaged Keana Local Government Area on Tuesday.

According to the Governor, his visit to thrive area was to assess the impact of the recent flood, as well as to review the progress of the ongoing Keana-Abuni-Kanje road construction.

He stated that the flood’s impact on the Keana-Giza road is now a top priority, as the destruction has forced commuters to take a lengthy detour through Lafia and Obi.

“The impact of the flood is most devastating on the road connecting Keana and Giza, which has completely separated the two communities. In order to drive from Keana to Giza, commuters have to go through Lafia-Obi-Keana. This is something that we have to do immediately. We have to find some contractors to quickly repair the damage done by the flood,” he stated.

To address this emergency, he directed the Director-General of the Nasarawa State Bureau for Rural Development, Engineer Muhammad Sidi Sani to immediately engage a contractor to assess the damage and begin urgent remedial work.

The Governor also warned that without swift action, the road leading to Keana town itself risks being cut off from the rest of the state.

While thanking community leaders, including the Osana of Keana, HRH Alhaji Abdullahi Amegwa Agbo and the local government chairman, Hon. Adamu Aboki, for their efforts in calming residents, Governor Sule particularly commended the council chairman for his efforts in ensuring security in the area.

“I thank the Commissioner for Environment and all the other people, especially the Chairman of the local government, one of the most performing chairmen when it comes to the area of security, and development. I thank everyone of them for what they have done so far,” he added.

However, the Governor openly expressed his dissatisfaction with the slow pace of work on the Keana-Abuni-Kanje road project, urging the contractor handling the project to speed up work.

In order to fast track the completion of the road, Governor Sule assured that additional 20 percent of the total cost of the project would be made available to the contractor.

The Governor was accompanied on the visit by the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Margaret Elayo, Secretary to the Government of Nasarawa State, Labaran Shuaibu Magaji, PhD, as well as the State Project Coordinator of the NEWMAP-EIB Nasarawa Project Management Unit, Dr. Mohammed Isma’il, amongst other government officials.

Recall that only recently, floods devastated communities in Keana Local Government Area following heavy downpour, cutting-off Giza, with the bridge linking Keana to the rest of the state on the verge of being washed away.
