Governor Aiyedatiwa Reaffirms Commitment to Justice for Owo Attack Victims, Highlights Security Efforts
Ondo State Governor, Dr. Lucky Orimisan Aiyedatiwa, has reiterated his administration’s unwavering resolve to ensure justice is served for the victims of the June 5, 2022 terrorist attack in Owo.
Speaking on Saturday at the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Akure, the Governor emphasized that security remains a top priority for his government.
Governor Aiyedatiwa made these remarks as the Special Guest of Honour during a ceremony marking the 15th Episcopal Anniversary and 35th Priestly Ordination of the Bishop of the Ondo Catholic Diocese, Most Rev. Jude Ayodeji Arogundade.
He commended Bishop Arogundade for his impactful leadership, describing him as a symbol of hope, peace, and justice whose spiritual guidance has positively influenced countless lives across Ondo State and beyond.
The Governor also lauded the Catholic Church for its pivotal role in education, healthcare, and social development both in the state and across Nigeria.
Highlighting his administration’s continued investment in security, Governor Aiyedatiwa disclosed the recent procurement of 75 Hilux vehicles fitted with advanced security equipment to support law enforcement efforts.
He also noted the government’s ongoing provision of monthly logistics support to security agencies.
“These initiatives have collectively contributed to Ondo State’s reputation as one of the safest in the country. Our people now go about their daily lives with a renewed sense of safety, and this stability has made the state more attractive to investors,” he stated.
Reflecting on the Owo massacre, the Governor recounted the tragic killing of approximately 40 worshippers during an attack on St. Francis Catholic Church by terrorists using rifles and Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs).
He acknowledged the enduring trauma of the survivors and reaffirmed the government’s pursuit of justice.
He further revealed that several suspects connected to the attack—namely Idris Omeiza, Al-Quasim Idris, Jamiu Abdulmalik, Abdulhaleem Idris, and Momoh Abubakar—have been apprehended through joint efforts by federal and state security agencies, and are currently facing prosecution by the Department of State Services (DSS).
“We pray for the eternal rest of those lost in the attack. As we continue this journey toward justice, let us unite in rejecting terror and criminality. Through collective strength and compassion, we will heal and build a safer, stronger Sunshine State,” he concluded.
In his response, Bishop Arogundade expressed gratitude to both the government and the people for returning missionary schools to the Church’s care.
He assured that these institutions will remain committed to delivering quality education rooted in strong moral values.
Reflecting on his 35 years in priesthood and 15 years as Bishop, Arogundade encouraged newly ordained priests to remain devoted to their calling and to serve humanity faithfully.
He also thanked the Governor for attending the anniversary celebration, pledging continued prayers and support from the Catholic Church for his administration.
Following the ceremony, Governor Aiyedatiwa joined dignitaries in unveiling the church’s new multipurpose hall and participated in a tour of the facility
