General Musa: Coup Attempt in Nigeria an Effort in Futility, Civilians Would Have Resisted

Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, has described the recent coup attempt in the country as a futile and misguided venture, saying even civilians would have resisted those behind the plot.
Speaking during an interview on Arise TV, General Musa said the Armed Forces of Nigeria remain committed to democratic governance and are working to ensure younger officers understand that democracy is better than military rule.
“We are trying to show younger officers that democracy is far better than any military rule,” he said.
The defence chief expressed disappointment over the involvement of some junior officers in the failed attempt, describing them as confused and lacking direction.
“I looked at the individuals involved in this coup and shook my head. They are a bunch of confused junior officers who didn’t know their left from right,” Musa stated.
According to him, investigations into the matter were thorough and showed there was no justification for such an action, especially at a time when the government was improving the welfare of military personnel.
“The country was going very well, the armed forces are being taken care of, and efforts are even being made to increase salaries and allowances,” he added.
General Musa described the attempted coup as “foolhardy,” stressing that Nigerians, including ordinary civilians, would have stood against any unconstitutional takeover of power.
His remarks come amid concerns over the resurgence of coups in parts of Africa, with Nigerian authorities reiterating their commitment to democracy and constitutional order.
