Gen. Iyare fires on, wins Jackson Obaseki’s 80th birthday tournament

It was another milestone record for Gen. Oscar Iyare (rtd) as he emerged overall champion at Dr. Jackson Gaius Obaseki’s 80th Birthday Golf Tournament concluded at Benin Club Golf Section (BCGS), Edo State.

Gen. Iyare retired but not tired in the game of golf on Saturday beat other competitors with a net score of 68 to win the tournament at the expense of other younger golfers who now see him as a threat on the course.

It could be recalled that Gen. Iyare was crown winner at the Mavericks Memorial Golf Kitty held four days earlier at the club before adding the Obaseki’s 80th tournament trophy on Saturday.

Moreover, Osazee Iyare, a single handicap player who played 79 gross at the grande finale hereby adjudged the best gross winner in the men’s category while fmr. Vice President, LGAN South South Zone, Sandra Emina won the ladies best gross award with 88 gross.

The Obaseki’s 80th tournament was organised by the BCGS Management Committee in collaboration with other notable members to honour his arrival into the Octogenarian ladder, and it featured over 200 amateur players, professionals and caddies who showcased the club’s challenging and picturesque 18-hole course.

In the same vein, Joseph Kayoma (17) won the men’s hcp 0-18 trophy with a net score of 74, beating Felix Aganmwonyi (14) on count back, while Dr. Matthew Oriakhi (13) beat Vice Captain, Victor Oriasotie Esq. (6) on count back, having both played 75 net to settle for third and fourth respectively.

Ladies hcp 0 -28 category was an interesting event as it was battle of hcp 20s as Dorothy Chukwudi Esq. (28) won with 67 net, while Lady Vice Captain, Joy Omorogiuwa (21) with 76 net placed second, beating Edith Edeki (21) who settled for third spot on count back.

The professionals game on Thursday was tensed and keenly contested, but at the end, it was Colins Okoro with a gross score of 67 won ahead of Chukwudi Okoro who had 72 gross while Osas Enaigbe (UBTH) placed third with 73 gross.

Other winners were Dr. Mojeed Momoh (19) with 68 net in the men’s hcp 19-28. Ladies hcp 29-36 trophy went to Paula Oghumah (36) with 70 net. Alhaji Oseni Ahmed, 71 net and Robert Uwamagbe, 80 net won veteran and super veteran men. Also, Dr. Marian Benka-Coker, 70 net and Prof. Josephine Mokwunyei, 76 net won veteran and super veteran ladies too.

Guest men trophy was won by G. Omonohio, 71 net, Ikay Afe with 79 net won the special guest men while Juliet Udah, 82 net won the guest ladies trophy

Moreover, Lucky Osarenkhoe, and Juliet Ogbeifun won longest drive, hole one, while Elder Monday Ikhureigbe won the nearest the pin, hole two on Friday.

On Saturday, fmr. Lady captain, Suwadeetu Mahmud and Oriasotie won longest drive, hole 18 and 10 respectively. Sandra Emina, fmr. Vice President, LGAN South South Zone, and Mr. G. Omonohio won nearest the pin hole 14.

Encomiums were showered on the celebrant who was accompanied to the dinner party by his wife, children, grandchildren, family members, friends and many others.

Highlights of the event was presentation of trophies, awards, golf bags and many others to winners across various categories.
