France vows stronger counter-terror support for Nigeria — Macron

France will step up its counter-terrorism cooperation with Nigeria, President Emmanuel Macron has announced.

In a statement shared on X on Sunday, Macron said he had spoken with President Bola Tinubu about the escalating security challenges confronting Nigeria.

He noted that he reaffirmed France’s solidarity with Nigeria, especially as the country faces “various security challenges, particularly the terrorist threat in the north.”

According to him, France will, at Tinubu’s request, deepen its security partnership with Nigeria and expand assistance to communities affected by extremist violence.

Macron also urged the wider international community to increase its support, stressing that “no one can remain a spectator” in the fight against violent extremist groups.

“I spoke with President Tinubu of Nigeria, @officialABAT,” Macron wrote. “I conveyed France’s solidarity in the face of the various security challenges, particularly the terrorist threat in the North. At his request, we will strengthen our partnership with the authorities and our support for the affected populations. We call on all our partners to step up their engagement. No one can remain a spectator.”
