Foiled Benin coup highlights Tinubu’s steady hand in safeguarding West African stability – Presidency

The Presidency has said Nigeria’s swift reaction to the failed coup attempt in the Republic of Benin reflects President Bola Tinubu’s strong regional leadership and his commitment to protecting democratic governance across West Africa.

The incident unfolded on Sunday when soldiers aligned with the self-styled “Military Committee for Refoundation,” led by Lt. Col. Pascal Tigri, briefly took over Benin’s state broadcaster in Cotonou, announcing the removal of President Patrice Talon. The Beninese government later confirmed that loyal troops quickly regained control and neutralised the plot.

In a statement shared on X on Monday, the President’s Special Assistant on Social Media, Dada Olusegun, said the episode once again demonstrated Tinubu’s determination to uphold constitutional rule and prevent democratic backsliding within the sub-region.

According to him, “The attempted coup in the Republic of Benin reinforces the pivotal role President Bola Ahmed Tinubu plays in protecting democracy and maintaining regional stability. As events unfolded in Cotonou on December 7, Nigeria acted with speed and clarity under the President’s direction, sending a strong signal in support of constitutional order.”

Olusegun noted that although Benin’s security forces promptly contained the mutiny, Nigeria’s immediate condemnation helped shape ECOWAS’ coordinated response and reaffirmed the region’s firm opposition to unlawful seizures of power.

He added that Tinubu’s stance aligned seamlessly with ECOWAS’ position, reflecting his broader efforts as the bloc’s Chair to push back against the rising tide of coups and ensure a unified regional front whenever democratic institutions come under threat.

While acknowledging that the attempted coup underscores ongoing vulnerabilities within the region’s democratic transitions, the presidential aide said it equally highlights the value of steady, principled leadership.

“President Tinubu’s clear and decisive response reinforced Nigeria’s long-standing role as a stabilising anchor in West Africa,” he said. “As Benin moves toward its 2026 political transition and the region continues to confront military disruptions, the President’s unwavering defence of constitutional rule remains a guiding force in shaping a more secure, democratic future for West Africa.”
