FMC Abuja denies negligence in snake bite death of Ifunanya Nwagene

The Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abuja, has issued a clarification over the death of Ms. Ifunanya Lucy Nwagene, who died from complications following a snake bite, amid growing social media allegations of negligence and lack of medical supplies.

In a statement dated February 1, 2026, the hospital management said Ms. Nwagene passed away on January 31 after suffering severe neurotoxic complications caused by the snake bite. The statement was signed by the Head of Clinical Services, Dr. Bioku Muftau.

According to the hospital, medical personnel acted promptly and provided immediate care upon her arrival. Treatment administered included resuscitation, intravenous fluids, intranasal oxygen, and the use of polyvalent snake antivenom.

The hospital explained that following a rapid but thorough assessment, it became evident that the victim’s condition was critical due to the neurotoxic effects of the venom. Plans were made to transfer her to the Intensive Care Unit for advanced care, but her condition reportedly deteriorated suddenly just before the transfer.

“Despite sustained efforts by our medical team, including CPR and other life-saving interventions, she could not be revived,” the statement said.

FMC Abuja strongly refuted claims circulating online that anti-snake venom was unavailable or that the response of its staff was inadequate, describing such allegations as unfounded and misleading.

The management expressed condolences to the Nwagene family and stressed its commitment to professionalism, transparency, and quality healthcare delivery. It also urged members of the public to rely on credible sources for information rather than social media speculation.

The hospital added that it remains open to further inquiries as it continues to uphold standards of patient care and medical ethics.
